The Benderson Family Heart Center’s Acute Cardiac Care Unit (ACCU) and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Boston Children’s Hospital are now the first cardiac units in the world to achieve Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) Certification.
Following a rigorous review process by the NIDCAP Federation International in April 2026, the ACCU and CICU exceeded certification benchmarks across all domains for excellence in individualized, relationship-based developmental care supporting the medical, neurodevelopmental, and emotional needs of hospitalized infants and their families. Reviewers praised the units’ interdisciplinary collaboration, creativity in providing developmental care for highly acute infants and older children, and strong culture of learning.
Special recognition is due to Samantha Butler PhD, Susan Herel CPNP, and Christine Rachwal MSN, RN, CCRN, CWOCN whose leadership and advocacy were instrumental in advancing this work.
